Ethiopian Airlines

Beginning humbly, Ethiopian Airlines (Ethiopian) has marked 79 years of a successful journey. Over the decades, the airline has established itself as a leader across all facets of the aviation industry, including technology, leadership, network expansion, and aviation mentoring. Today, Ethiopian is recognized as the leading Aviation Group in Africa.

Ethiopian commenced operations on April 8, 1946, with five C-47 aircraft, operating its inaugural flight to Cairo via Asmara. Since then, the airline has grown exponentially, continuously introducing cutting-edge aviation technology and systems. As a technology pioneer in Africa, Ethiopian was the first to introduce jet airplanes on the continent, including the B767, B777-200LR, B787 Dreamliner, and 787-9. It also led the way in operating Africa’s first Airbus aircraft, the A350-900 XWB and A350-1000. Currently, Ethiopian operates a fleet of over 160 modern aircraft with an average age of less than seven years, and more than 60 ultramodern aircraft are on order.

Living its motto, “Bringing Africa Together and Beyond,” Ethiopian has created an extensive network connecting its hub in Addis Ababa to more than 145 international passenger and cargo destinations, including 65 African cities. With daily and multiple flights and minimal layovers, Ethiopian serves more destinations within Africa than any other airline.

In December 2011, Ethiopian made a significant leap by joining Star Alliance, the world’s largest airline alliance. Over the years, the airline has earned numerous accolades, including Skytrax’s Four-Star Airline ranking, the 2025 APEX Passenger Choice Award for Best Overall in Africa, and the US President’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Building on decades of success, Ethiopian has achieved more than threefold growth over the past decade. Having accomplished its 15-year strategic plan, Vision 2025, ahead of schedule, the airline has now launched a more ambitious strategic roadmap, Vision 2035, to drive continued growth and strengthen its leadership in aviation.
